Workshops & Special Sessions

Discussion, debate and hands-on learning |
Included in your Congress registration

Alongside the technical presentations and the NAFEMS short training courses, the Congress programme includes workshops where the questions are put to the room, and special sessions led by experienced practitioners. All of them are open to registered delegates at no extra charge.

Workshops

Unlocking your Organisation's Simulation Capability through Maturity Assessment
Moderator: Andy Richardson

What a simulation maturity assessment is, why you would run one, and what it can deliver. The workshop runs in three parts:

  • Presentation: your goals for modelling and simulation, the types of maturity assessment, the Organisation Simulation Capability Maturity (OSCM) framework, the practicalities of an assessment, and the benefits it brings.
  • Mini survey: your own goals and challenges.
  • Discussion: experiences of different types of assessment, practical suggestions, and examples of the benefits achieved.

PSE (Professional Simulation Engineer) Certification
Moderator: Gino Duffett (NAFEMS)

PSE Certification allows simulation engineers to demonstrate the competencies they have built up over their professional career. This workshop explains why the scheme is useful, how it works and how to apply, with client case studies and a walk-through of the PSE Competency Tracker. Questions and discussion are welcome.

Simulation AI: Finding What Works in a Sea of Hype
Led by: Max Kassera (yasAI/NAFEMS)

There are many claims about what Simulation AI can do: how can engineers tell which applications are worth pursuing? Using contrasting examples, this workshop looks at the engineering task, the simulations available, and the results a model must produce. It discusses when a simple surrogate is enough, when a geometry-aware model may fit, and where each reaches its limits.

Simulation AI: Evaluating Projects Before the Budget Burns
Led by: Max Kassera (yasAI/NAFEMS)

A good first result can make a Simulation AI project look ready for more investment. But will the model work on new designs, and are its failure modes acceptable for the intended engineering use? Using an illustrative example, this workshop examines the evidence behind a decision to continue, narrow the scope, gather more data, or stop.

Special Sessions

Effective Post-Processing
Led by: Tony Abbey (FETraining)

The session starts with a look at how to interpret displaced shapes and stress plots, including the effects of deformation scaling, contour limits, colour choices and element averaging. Structural FEA examples are used to illustrate how display settings can clarify a load path or hide a significant stress gradient, and live interactive apps are used to demonstrate why an attractive, smoothed contour plot can give a misleading impression of results from a coarse mesh. The session then moves beyond a von Mises survey plot: Cartesian and principal stresses, transforming results into local coordinate systems, and using contour and vector plots to identify tension, compression, bending and shear. Examples of lugs and structural members are used to demonstrate how to trace stress flow through a component, so you leave able to turn basic post-processing results into a clear picture of structural behaviour and potential failure locations.

Getting Started with Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics
Led by: Laurence Marks (Consultant)

A first step into the SPH method, the session explains what an SPH model is and how it differs from other solution technologies used for the same or similar problems, introduces the terminology and workflows, and sets out the advantages and disadvantages of the technology. It presents example applications and points you to more in-depth resources and code.

Looking for structured training? NAFEMS short training courses also run during the Congress, included in your registration. More workshops and sessions may be added as the programme is confirmed.

The programme opens on Sunday 25 April 2027, with registration from 12:00 and the first workshops and courses from 13:15. Timings for each session will be published with the Congress agenda.
